Southern 630 - Steam on the Mainline2013 Bristol Area TripsAs part of the new Norfolk Southern '21st Century Steam' program, Southern Railway 2-8-0 #630 powered two excursions in early March 2013, originating from the historic depot in Bristol, VA. Located on the Virginia/Tennessee border, Bristol was served by both the Norfolk & Western and the Southern Railway in the steam era. Both railroads shared the depot on State Street, with the Southern heading south to Knoxville, TN and the N&W heading north to Roanoke, VA. On Saturday March 9th, #630 pulled a public excursion north to Radford, VA on the old N&W Pulaski District. This 221-mile roundtrip passed many locations made famous by photographer O. Winston Link including Seven Mile Ford, Rural Retreat, and Max Meadows. A cold morning made for great steam plumes, as #630 put on an impressive show pulling the 13-car train. On Sunday March 10th, #630 headed south to Bulls Gap, TN with another public excursion, this time on former Southern rails. This 152-mile roundtrip passed some familiar territory for #630, including Johnson City, TN where she operated on the ET&WNC from 1952-1967 before being reacquired by the Southern for excursion service. This program also has coverage of the Monday ferry move to Roanoke, VA where #630 would operate more public trips the following weekend. Filmed entirely in HD, this program features high speed running with great stack talk, as #630 gives it her all with her 56-inch drivers. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music. | |

Union Pacific 844 - Pride of the FleetThe 150th Anniversary TourOn July 1st 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the first Pacific Railroad Act, creating the Union Pacific (and Central Pacific), and authorizing construction of a transcontinental railroad to span the vast territory from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. In 2012, the Union Pacific marked its 150th anniversary with a yearlong celebration of special events. This was also the busiest year to date for the Steam Team, as locomotive #844 traveled over much of the UP system in her role as goodwill ambassador. This 2 DVD set covers a number of the 2012 excursions. On Disc 1, you’ll see coverage of the March 22nd & 23rd ferry moves for the “Shiloh Limited” excursion, as #844 travels from Cheyenne, WY to Council Bluffs, IA. Most 2012 trips were dubbed the “UP 150th Express” and the first on this disc is a Cheyenne to North Platte, NE jaunt on June 8th. Next up is an extensive segment on the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Train, with all 3 days of operation covered (July 19th, 21st, 22nd), plus unreleased footage from the 2011 train. Disc 2 starts with some rare mileage on the Yoder Subdivision, as #844 heads to the Nebraska State Fair on August 30th. Next you’ll see #844 on September 17th as she returns to Cheyenne after spending the weekend at the annual North Platte Rail Fest. A trip to Sacramento, CA follows with coverage of the first 3 days of travel, as #844 races from Cheyenne, WY to Elko, NV in late September. Finally, we reunite with #844 in Ogden, UT for the 2-day return trip to Cheyenne in October. Santa Fe 3751 - Steam to the South RimThe 2012 Grand Canyon LimitedAs part of the 2012 Arizona Centennial celebration, Santa Fe 4-8-4 #3751 pulled a special train from Los Angeles, CA to Williams, AZ in mid-May. Once in Williams, #3751 doubleheaded with Grand Canyon Railway 2-8-2 #4960 on a roundtrip excursion to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, before pulling her train back to California. This program covers all five days of operation on the "Grand Canyon Limited." This was the most anticipated steam event of 2012, as #3751 left southern California for the first time in many years, and traveled to the Grand Canyon for only the second time ever. In this program, you'll see #3751 in a variety of trackside locations, with plenty of runbys in addition to footage of the many servicing stops. Highlights include: #3751 battling the grades of Cajon Pass, high speed running through the desert on the BNSF transcon mainline, and of course the Grand Canyon doubleheader. You'll see #3751 on the scenic 'Peavine' line with a backdrop of impressive mountains, plus the massive Hell Canyon Bridge at Drake.
