Cumbres & Toltec - 50th Anniversary Freights

2020 was the 50th anniversary of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which operates 64-miles of former Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge trackage between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. To mark the occasion a number of special events were planned, including the Victorian Roundup covered in Victorian Iron Horses Vol. 1. This video looks at two 50th anniversary photo freights, beginning in 2018 with a photo charter commemorating the last Rio Grande freights over Cumbres Pass (which took place in August of 1968).

The program begins in August of 2018 with a 2-day event hosted by Trains Magazine. On August 25th, K-36 locomotives #488 (disguised as #483) and #484 pulled a photo freight to Cumbres Pass. Leaving Chama, #483 led the freight up the 4% grade, with #484 pushing on the rear. At the summit additional cars were added to the train. #484 then ran ahead light to Antonito, with #483 following behind with the freight consist. The next day recreated the last westbound freight, which featured #483 and #484 teaming up for a rare doubleheader from Antonito to Cumbres.

The second part of the program looks at the 'Toltec Rattler Redux' in October of 2022. After a snowstorm on the last day of the regular season, the railroad ran 2-days of photo freights celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Toltec Rattler: the very first photo special on the C&TS. Locomotive #483 was backdated to its 1972 appearance for the event, which took place on October 24th and 25th. It pulled a freight consist from Chama to Big Horn on both days, with fresh snow coating the ground at the higher elevations. With cold mornings both days, this segment features great action on the 4% grade to Cumbres Pass.

Filmed entirely in HD, this video features great stack talk from the big K-36 locomotives. As usual, you'll see the wide-open Rocky Mountain scenery the C&TS is known for, plus a handful of unique views in the snow. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music. It's available on standard definition widescreen DVD, High Definition Blu-ray disc, and for rental or purchase through Vimeo's On Demand streaming service.

Victorian Iron Horses on the C&TS - Volume 2
RGS 20 and the Fall Photo Trips

A couple of days after the conclusion of the Victorian Iron Horse Roundup, Rio Grande Southern 4-6-0 #20 operated it's first excursion on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad - a doubleheader with K-27 2-8-2 #463 masquerading as Rio Grande Southern #455. This program begins with that August 31st doubleheader, then chronicles a month of special excursions with #20 and the other two resident Victorian locomotives on the C&TS: D&RG 4-6-0 #168 and D&RG 2-8-0 #425 (more commonly known as Denver & Rio Grande Western #315).

While Eureka and Glenbrook were the stars of the August Roundup (covered on Victorian Iron Horses on the C&TS - Vol. 1), RGS #20 was the main attraction in September and October. The 1899-built 4-6-0 was visiting from the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden - it's first trip away from the museum since it was returned to steam in 2020. This program covers all of #20's runs except a September 5th trip from Antonito to Big Horn.

The video includes:

  • Aug. 31st - Trains Magazine RGS charter w/ #20 and #455 - Antonito to Osier
  • Sept. 25th - Friends of the C&TS D&RG #168 charter - Antonito to Osier
  • Sept. 27th - Lerro Productions charter Day 1: D&RG #168 - Antonito to Big Horn
  • Sept. 28th - Day 2: D&RG #425 - Antonito to Cascade Trestle
  • Sept. 29th - Day 3: RGS #20 - Antonito to Osier
  • Oct. 1st - RGS #20 - Antonito to Chama
  • Oct. 2nd - RGS #20 - Chama to Antonito (doubleheaded w/ #455 to Cumbres Pass)

The aspens were at peak fall color in early October and you won't want to miss RGS #20 climbing the 4% grade from Chama to Cumbres Pass. You'll also see breathtaking sunrise shots with both #168 and #425 on the east side of the railroad, plus some lesser known photo spots that were featured during the 3-day Lerro Productions charter that ran out of Antonito, CO.

Filmed entirely in HD, this video features 3 narrow gauge 19th century steam locomotives operating at home in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. In addition to the sweeping vistas of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, there's plenty of great steam action in this comprehensive look at RGS 20 and the fall photo trips. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music. It's available on standard definition widescreen DVD, High Definition Blu-ray disc, and for rental or purchase through Vimeo's On Demand streaming service.

Victorian Iron Horses on the C&TS - Volume 1
Eureka, Glenbrook, and the VIHR

As part of it's 50th anniversary celebration, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad hosted an unprecedented gathering of 5 narrow gauge steam locomotives built in the 19th century - the Victorian Iron Horse Roundup. The five locomotives were Denver & Rio Grande 4-6-0 #168, Denver & Rio Grande 2-8-0 #425, Eureka & Palisade 4-4-0 #4 "Eureka," Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Co. 2-6-0 #1 "Glenbrook," and Rio Grande Southern 4-6-0 #20. This 2-disc video features comprehensive coverage of the 9-day event, with a combination of trackside video and aerial footage along the 64 miles between Antonito, CO and Chama, NM.

The Roundup featured numerous special excursions, with doubleheaders being the norm on most days. Eureka and Glenbrook (the two 1875 woodburners) were always operated together, while #168 and #425 also ran as a pair most of the time. RGS #20 was fired up and on display, but didn't operate any excursions until August 31st after the conclusion of the Roundup. Those trips are covered in the companion volume: Victorian Iron Horses on the C&TS - Vol. 2. In addition to complete coverage of the Roundup, this program includes a couple of special trips the week before the Victorian event.

The video includes:

  • Aug. 15th - D&RG #168 - Antonito to Osier w/ the historic cars
  • Aug. 17th - D&RG #425 - Chama to Antonito positioning move for the VIHR
  • Aug. 20th - Pre-VIHR preparations
  • Aug. 21st - Day 1: D&RG #168 and #425 - Antonito to Big Horn
  • Aug. 22nd - Day 2: Eureka and Glenbrook - Antonito to Big Horn
  • Aug. 23rd - Day 3: Antonito Open House / Display Day
  • Aug. 24th - Day 4: D&RG #168 and #425 - Antonito to Osier
  • Aug. 25th - Day 5: Eureka and Glenbrook - Antonito to Big Horn Photographers Special
  • Aug. 26th - Day 6: Eureka and Glenbrook - Antonito to Osier
  • Aug. 27th - Day 7: Across the Railroad: All 4 locomotives - Antonito to Chama
  • Aug. 28th - Day 8: Eureka and Glenbrook - Chama to Cumbres (only made it to Cresco)
  • Aug. 29th - Day 9: D&RG #168 and #425 - Chama to Antonito (coverage to Cumbres)

Filmed entirely in HD, this 2-disc video chronicles what was undeniably the biggest steam event of 2021, with unparalleled in-depth coverage. This program gives you a front row seat to the once-in-a-lifetime Victorian Iron Horse Roundup. It features the breathtaking high country views the Cumbres & Toltec is famous for, plus 4 immaculately restored pre-1900 locomotives stretching their legs on the steep grades of Cumbres Pass.

This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music. It's available on standard definition widescreen DVD, High Definition Blu-ray disc, and for rental or purchase through Vimeo's On Demand streaming service.
