2102 - Return of the Iron Horse Rambles
Volume 4 - Lehigh Line Excursions
After two years of trips on the southern half of the Reading & Northern system, #2102 pulled her first excursions over the Lehigh Line in 2024. Originally Lehigh Valley trackage, it's now the northern half of the Reading & Northern mainline. Starting in Jim Thorpe the railroad heads north along the Lehigh River, passing through the Lehigh Gorge. The tracks then climb Penobscot Mountain before a long descent to the Susquehanna River at Pittston.
On June 22nd 2024, #2102 took 17-cars from Nesquehoning to Tunkhannock - the very first Iron Horse Ramble over the Lehigh Line. At 160-miles, this was the T-1's longest excursion to date on the R&N, as the locomotive traversed the length of the Lehigh Line before continuing 22-miles further north along the Susquehanna River. For this historic first trip we'll cover the action with a mix of trackside shots and views from inside #2102's cab.
The next part of the video looks at the second Autumn Leaf Excursion of the year on October 19th 2024, with #2102 traveling the familiar route between Reading and Jim Thorpe. The locomotive again pulled a 17-car train, this time on a picture perfect fall day. We'll take a peak inside the cab in the morning as the crew fights slippery rails on the grade north of Tamaqua. Then in the afternoon, you'll see #2102 tackle the steep hill leaving Jim Thorpe with an uninterrupted segment on the climb up to Nesquehoning.
The last portion of the video features another visit to the Lehigh Line with coverage of the Nesquehoning to Pittston Ramble on August 23rd 2025. On this trip #2102 barked up the tough Penobscot Mountain grade with ease. After chasing the train to Pittston, we'll once again climb aboard the cab in the afternoon for an extended segment on the long steep climb up to Mountain Top. After a spectacular departure from Penobscot, we'll follow #2102 all the way back to Nesquehoning in the late afternoon.
Filmed entirely in HD, this program features plenty of great action inside the cab as #2102 battles the steep grades of the Reading & Northern mainline. It also includes thrilling trackside shots, new scenery, and, for the first time, maps highlighting the route. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music. It's available on standard definition widescreen DVD, High Definition Blu-ray disc, and for rental or purchase through Vimeo's On Demand streaming service.
