Union Pacific 844 - Rare Miles & Familiar Rails

For the last leg of the extensive 150th anniversary tour in 2012, UP #844 traveled some very rare miles on the way home to Cheyenne. Starting in Texas, #844 utilized BNSF trackage rights on the Twin Peaks and Spanish Peaks subdivisions. Known as the Trinchera Pass line, this route hadn't seen a steam locomotive since regular service ended in the 1950's. You'll see #844 on this remote and rarely seen line as she travels from Texline, TX to Walsenburg, CO on November 4th. A few days later, we would follow #844 from Pueblo, CO to Denver, CO on the Joint Line.

In 2013 #844 operated only 2 trips, staying close to home on familiar rails. On June 10th, she left Cheyenne, WY bound for Omaha and display at the College Baseball World Series. Dubbed the "UP Home Plate Special," this program covers the first day of the trip as she traveled east to North Platte, NE on the Sidney subdivision. This was the first trip of the year after winter maintenance, and #844 performed flawlessly.

Finally we'll look at the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Train in late July. #844 once again handled the 23-car train, taking passengers from Denver to Cheyenne for the opening day of the legendary Frontier Days Rodeo. In addition to Saturday's train, you'll see the positioning moves on Thursday and Sunday. #844 was without her characteristic red Mars light on these trips, giving her a slightly different appearance.

Filmed entirely in HD, this program features high speed running and great stack talk amidst western scenery. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music.

In addition to the standard widescreen DVD, this program is also available on HD Blu-ray disc.

Union Pacific 844 - Pride of the Fleet

The 150th Anniversary Tour

On July 1st 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the first Pacific Railroad Act, creating the Union Pacific (and Central Pacific), and authorizing construction of a transcontinental railroad to span the vast territory from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. In 2012, the Union Pacific marked its 150th anniversary with a yearlong celebration of special events. This was also the busiest year to date for the Steam Team, as locomotive #844 traveled over much of the UP system in her role as goodwill ambassador.

This 2 DVD set covers a number of the 2012 excursions. On Disc 1, you’ll see coverage of the March 22nd & 23rd ferry moves for the “Shiloh Limited” excursion, as #844 travels from Cheyenne, WY to Council Bluffs, IA. Most 2012 trips were dubbed the “UP 150th Express” and the first on this disc is a Cheyenne to North Platte, NE jaunt on June 8th. Next up is an extensive segment on the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Train, with all 3 days of operation covered (July 19th, 21st, 22nd), plus unreleased footage from the 2011 train.

Disc 2 starts with some rare mileage on the Yoder Subdivision, as #844 heads to the Nebraska State Fair on August 30th. Next you’ll see #844 on September 17th as she returns to Cheyenne after spending the weekend at the annual North Platte Rail Fest. A trip to Sacramento, CA follows with coverage of the first 3 days of travel, as #844 races from Cheyenne, WY to Elko, NV in late September. Finally, we reunite with #844 in Ogden, UT for the 2-day return trip to Cheyenne in October.

Filmed entirely in HD, this 2 DVD set features high speed running and great stack talk amidst western scenery. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music.

In addition to the standard widescreen DVD, this program is also available on HD Blu-ray disc.

Union Pacific 844 - South to the Southwest

The New Mexico & Arizona Centennial Tour

On October 29th 2011, Union Pacific steam locomotive #844 left its home in Cheyenne, WY and began a month-long tour to help celebrate the centennial of statehood in New Mexico and Arizona. In this program, we follow #844 on the first week of the tour as it travels from Cheyenne to Alamogordo, NM. Then at the end of the month, we reunite with the special in Ogden, UT for the 2-day return trip to Cheyenne.

Highlights include: multiple dramatic pacing scenes, majestic views of #844 operating in bitter cold temperatures with billowing clouds of white steam, and #844 traveling through blizzard conditions between Pueblo, CO and Dalhart, TX on BNSF trackage.

You'll see #844 on the Joint Line between Denver and Pueblo, crossing the impressive Canadian River bridge on the former Rock Island at Logan, NM, and climbing through scenic Echo Canyon in eastern Utah. #844 finally returns to Cheyenne with a twilight crossing of the famous Sherman Hill.

The DVD is broken into 8 segments:

  • Oct. 29th - Cheyenne, WY to Denver, CO
  • Oct. 30th - Denver to Colorado Springs
  • Nov. 1st - Colorado Springs to Pueblo
  • Nov. 2nd - Pueblo to Dalhart, TX
  • Nov. 4th - Dalhart to Tucumcari, NM

  • Nov. 28th - Ogden, UT to Rock Springs, WY
  • Nov. 29th - Rock Springs to Cheyenne

In addition, there is also a short segment on the 2011 Cheyenne Frontier Days train, as #844 pulls the annual Denver Post sponsored special to the rodeo in Cheyenne.

Filmed entirely in HD, this DVD features great steam action amidst spectacular mountain scenery.

Santa Fe 3751 - Steam to the South Rim

The 2012 Grand Canyon Limited

As part of the 2012 Arizona Centennial celebration, Santa Fe 4-8-4 #3751 pulled a special train from Los Angeles, CA to Williams, AZ in mid-May. Once in Williams #3751 doubleheaded with Grand Canyon Railway 2-8-2 #4960 on a roundtrip excursion to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, before pulling her train back to California. This program covers all five days of operation on this trip, which was known as the "Grand Canyon Limited."

This was the most anticipated steam event of 2012, as #3751 left southern California for the first time in many years and traveled to the Grand Canyon for only the second time ever. In this program you'll see #3751 in a variety of trackside locations, with plenty of runbys, plus footage at some of the servicing stops.

Highlights include: #3751 battling the grades of Cajon Pass, high speed running through the desert on the BNSF transcon mainline, and of course the Grand Canyon doubleheader. You'll see #3751 on the scenic 'Peavine' line with a backdrop of impressive mountains, plus the massive Hell Canyon Bridge at Drake.

Filmed entirely in HD, this program chronicles #3751's trip in stunning detail as she travels over 1300 miles through beautiful western scenery. Stark desert landscapes are contrasted with towering mountains as the train travels through the Mojave and Sonoran deserts on former Santa Fe rails. This program has minimal narration (with the option to turn it on or off) and no distracting music. It's available on standard definition widescreen DVD, High Definition Blu-ray disc, and for rental or purchase through Vimeo's On Demand streaming service.
